I am finally getting around to working up some loads for the 100 MDWS. When I tried to seat the first 3 rounds I got this ring around the top of the bullet. Do I need a different seater for this bullet? Is this a problem with my die?

A VLD-type seater plug will resolve that issue. A minor ring is no big deal, but if it is starting to deform the bullet's shape in any way then yes I would get a different one, or modify yours if you can.

The bullets have long noses.

to also add, a lot of neck tension can contribute to that along with burrs on the inside of the neck, the bullets are softer than some copper bullets that is why they work so those details are important.

Is it a compressed load? That's the only time I've run into that issue.

I pulled out my dye and unscrew the top so I could take the stem out and look at it. When I turned the dye upside down the stem would not fall out. It was sitting crooked and hanging up on the threads of the die. I pulled it out cleaned it. When I tried to put it back together I could not get the stem straight. I called Hornady today and they are sending me a new sleeve and stem.

I got my new sleeve and stem from Hornady and seater now works fine. I am still getting the rings on the bullets until my powder charge drops below 23.3 using a drop tube in LC brass. Therefore, it has to be caused by compressed load. What are my options? 23.3 does not give me the FPS I want for hunting

use a longer oal i run that bullet at around 2.28 it hits the lands in my barrels at 2.32

other option is custom seater stem, or if you have other hornady dies the seating collar and stem from a 7mm may move the tip in to the seater more and get it towards the stronger part of the bullet. or you live with the ring or move to a faster powder

Honestly - a little ring never hurt at all.  That is for a bullet.  Same can't be said for rings on left hand....

Good to know. It just looks like it should affect accuracy. I’m still going to get a longer seater stem and increase my coal a bit

I am going to increase my coal a bit. Mags can handle out to 2.285 (so can rifle). I’m also going to order the seater stem for ELD
