Northern Shooter Steel Targets from MDWS came through with a fantastic steel target system for me.

The order processed with me making a mistake I didn't catch till after the fact. MDWS straightened it out via PM here via the Forum. Thank you very much Mark.

The steel arrived at a friends house. He happens to own the range I belong to. Everything plus more (thank you Northern Shooter) arrived as described. Shipping is included in the price .. bonus if you ask me.

So .. I've been working way to many hours and just got around to putting everything together .. I made the three lil bears / goldy locks set-up. A large (7.5 ft legs) .. a medium (5.0 ft legs) .. and a lil (2.5 ft legs) arrangement for my targets.

Below is the large and small set-up together that I shot today.

The medium was in hiding after word got out that it was open season on steel targets [biggrin]

I have video's but .. no one wants to see all of that goodness [wink]

[I shot the steel with a Glock 19 9mm using 115 gr fmj at 20-25 yards and the 556 rifle was a 20" 1in7 CHF barrel (my back-up coyote gun) at 100 yards kneeling with 55 gr fmj.]

Thank you fella's .. more steel orders to follow.

JBFA .. I guess we could say .. I'm finally taking the challenge and going green and paperless .. finally [wink]

For those wondering .. this is a great portable, flexible and modular system / platform.

The steel angles slightly back (as you can see in the pictures) on all the steel targets that use the Northern Shooter Steel Arms .. even with the angle my targets at the bottom didn't get any splashs (it was below and behind the upper target by 2 feet) when I shot the upper targets. I've heard that this steel .. in this configuration can be shot safely at close range. I didn't test this feature .. but I have it on good authority that some law enforcement types do shoot this steel closer than I was prepared to do. I'll take their word for it.

As for my results .. the steel held up well to the handgun (9mm) at 20-25 yards .. and took the finish off the steel at 100 yards with the AR15 556 55 gr (previous) NATO round (FMJ like the 9mm). Nothing paint can't fix.

With that said .. I wouldn't shoot this steel inside 100 yards with a rifle. It would be perfectly safe .. but the steel would wear faster .. don't forget you can rotate your steel target so you get even wear.

Here's a great thread on the distances and such by the maker of the targets .. http://mdws.forumchitchat.com/post/northernshooter-steel-target-systems-7530244?&trail=25

From my experiences .. you can buy with confidence thru MadDogWeaponSystems. I do.

Just a note .. I haven't been paid or compensated .. in any way .. for my post.

Ummmm .. I do have one thing on the plate .. errrr a request by my buds .. [wink] .. you know the kind .. anyway .. I asked them what animals they would like to see next .. and ummm .. they have requested a "lock ness monster" (aka nessy) .. I told them that the swamp / pond behind the range wouldn't support such an expense .. plus I probably couldn't afford the shipping .. so we compromised .. in addition to a pig, fox, bobcat and coyote .. they want a SLOTH .. I know .. who needs one of those hanging around .. [biggrin]

I'll hit'chin'yenz up after vacation for more steel .. seems everyone at the range enjoyed it more than I did .. which I am having a hard time believing [biggrin]

I've never had to buy steel before since everyone else always provided it at matches or at their range.

Plus my range now offers a unique blend of members and non-members / guests. It's sad .. but they are pretty bad at being un-good stewards of the range. You couldn't be this clueless if you tried .. plus they are self discribed experts about everything firearms / hunting / etc .. and they aren't. Sigh ...

So my unique challenge was in finding a portable system that could be assembled and dis-assembled quickly .. since no one wants to spend a lot of time doing anything but shooting .. and pack up into a small package. It had to be durable. It had to be upgradable. It had to be modular. It had to be capable of set-up and being broke down by one person. It's all those things plus .. It's so simple a caveman can do it [biggrin]

Now I just need to build up a hobby farm of animals .. and a sloth.

Plus this will make our gun classes / practice sessions so much more gooder [wink] (e.g. just like Northern Shooter said)

[biggrin]

Northern Shooter ..

What hardware have you've found is the most durable?

I bought some zinc hardware and I feel like if shot it would make a mess .. easy and cheap enough to replace .. but is that the route folks take?

I run the zinc cheap stuff.Buy it by the box. It'll take some abuse, certainly harder stuff would hold up better. At least to pistol rounds. This is a issue with the Police, they don't like to use tools.I make welded mounts on the back of their targets to hold removable swing arms.
I don't feel the extra cost/labor is worth it for me.The Police have a bigger budget than I do.They actually have a rather complicated design, pistol qualification and a different type for a hostage scenario. Those take some heavy abuse, they shoot much closer than 100 yards (5.56 and 308).
